Payments for Contributors

Photographers and Illustrators:
Cover photos are paid at a flat rate of $200.00. Interior photos and illustrations are paid at a negotiable rate of $50.00.

Writers:
Canadian Newcomer Magazine pays freelance writers 10 cents per word and up on acceptance, depending upon what we feel your story is worth to the publication.
We won’t be able to tell you what rate you will be offered until we read your article, but…

Here are some general guidelines to our payscale:

No Cash Payment
We do accept some articles that are not paid in cash, as follows:
We will consider self-authored articles from organizations including corporations that present themselves in such a way that we are convinced your program, product or service provides exceptional value or assistance to people settling in Canada. We are very interested in profiles of programs that find new ways to approach the job market, help people deal with emotional problems like culture shock, frustration, and loneliness and address immigrant issues like foreign credential recognition. We are always seeking profiles of educational institutions, immigrant serving agencies, non-profit and other government funded programs from any ministry at any level of government. If your town or city has launched an initiative aimed at attracting or helping Canadian newcomers, we would be interested in reading about it. Publication is the only payment offered for self-authored or self-promotional articles, but it is an excellent way to reach a very hard-to-target audience.
If you write stories or columns in your field of expertise (but not directly promoting your product or service; such as immigration law, real estate or even astrology, you will receive a byline identifying your credentials and providing a website or e-mail address through which you can be contacted - as well as a small ad in exchange for your article.
We use anywhere from 2 to 4 such articles per issue.

10 to 20 cents per word
We will pay freelance writers 10 cents per word for readable stories in simple English (accessible to Benchmark 5 ESL readers) that provide good usable information about a worthy program, product or service that is accessible to or aimed at helping recent immigrants get settled, employed, or integrated into Canadian society. We use anywhere from 7 to 20 of these per issue depending on their length and value to our audience.

Pitch us your idea for such a story and you stand a good chance of getting an assignment.
We will pay 20 cents per word for all stories that we consider particularly well written, fun, useful or insightful for our readers. Submissions and proposals should include quotations from reliable and relevant sources, testimonies and statistics. They should also be entertaining, creative (non-formulaic), and offer new perspective or ideas.

30 cents per word and higher
We will pay a minimum of 30 cents per word for “feature” stories in each issue. Your story must tie in some way with our themes and/or we must want very badly to publish it. It should tackle profound topics, propose a new point of view and create discussion. For the most part, we do not want to see over-the-top enthusiasm, non-constructive criticism or blind condemnation of the Canadian system; but within those boundaries, we welcome opinionated or even revolutionary dialogue. (But remember always to express yourself in simple language). The first feature story you sell us will pay you 30 cents per word. Any further feature stories would be at a negotiable rate above 30 cents a word. We use between one and three feature stories per issue.

If you are promised 30 cents a word in your current contract, or conditionally offered that rate based upon a proposal or query letter - then your completed story must be judged worthy of that rate by CNMAG editors. If we do not feel that your submission is worthy of the proffered word rate, you may be asked to rewrite or offered a lower rate (never less than 10 cents a word). If you refuse our terms, your submission will be rejected without a kill fee.

Article or illustration contracts will include a $10 flat rate for web reproduction rights. Articles may receive an additional $10 for French Language Rights.

Payment for puzzles, quizzes and cartoons to be negotiated at time of sale.
