Join Skills for Change and a collaboration of partners on March 30, 2012, at MaRS Centre in Toronto, for the first annual sector-series Conference for International Engineers!

Canadian Newcomer will be profiling participating agencies and organization in the Newcomer Newsletter and on this web page, so check back often for updates. The Keynote Speaker is Ontario’s first Fairness Commissioner, Hon. Jean Augustine.
Born in Grenada, Ms. Augustine came to Canada in 1960. After earning Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees at the University of Toronto, she became an elementary school principal with the Metropolitan Separate School Board in Toronto.
After a stint as chair of the Metro Toronto Housing Authority, Ms. Augustine was elected to the House of Commons in the riding of Etobicoke-Lakeshore. The first African-Canadian woman in Parliament, she served as minister of state for multiculturalism and the status of women, and was a Deputy Speaker and Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister.
She has been honoured by many organizations for her leadership and community involvement and has been awarded a number of honorary Doctor of Laws degrees. The Jean Augustine Scholarship helps single mothers attend George Brown College and Centennial College in Toronto. York University’s Faculty of Education established the Jean Augustine Chair in Education in the New Urban Environment. In December 2009, she was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada. Ms. Augustine cares passionately about education and the challenges faced by newcomers to the province.
Other presenters include Jon Dogterom, Dr. Nava Israel and Roberto Chiotti.
Mr. Dogterom is a Clean Tech advisor in MaRS Discovery District who has been active in innovation and commercialization and renewable energy technologies, both as an entrepreneur and in publicly-traded companies. Former Director of Business Development of Hydrogenics Corporation, Mr. Dogterom is a co-founder of Sustainable Energy Technologies, and consultant for Pembina Institute.
Dr. Israel, Founder of Fusion Global Education,, has over 20 years of entrepreneurial project development and management. A leader in the areas of cultural competence, behavioural change, and culture-driven professional communication, Dr. Israel has designed, developed and implemented academic programs, including competency-based assessments, training and bridging for international talent.
Mr. Chiotti is a Toronto architect and founding partner of Larkin Architect Limited. He is a LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Accredited Professional and a founding member of the Strategic Planning Committee for the Greater Toronto Chapter of the CaGBC (Canadian Green Building Council). Currently serving as a member of the Advisory Council for both the Greening of Sacred Spaces Initiative and the World Centre for Inter-Spirituality and Ecology in Toronto.
