A settlement worker is often the best first contact when you are unsure which office, form or program you need. They do not replace a lawyer, doctor or licensed immigration representative, but they can help you find the right service.
What a settlement organization may help with
- understanding identification, health and benefit applications
- finding language assessment and classes
- preparing for work or connecting with employment programs
- registering children for school
- finding community, housing and transportation information
- connecting with interpretation, legal clinics or crisis services
Services and eligibility vary. Ask whether the program is funded for your immigration status before making an appointment.
How to find one
Use the federal newcomer-service finder and enter your postal code, city or province. You can filter for language training, employment, services for women, youth, seniors, refugees and other needs.
If the nearest office is far away, ask about phone or video appointments. Libraries and community centres may also host settlement workers on certain days.
What to bring
Bring only the documents relevant to the question. This may include your passport or immigration document, proof of address, letters you need help understanding and any application confirmation number. Ask before emailing sensitive documents.

If your issue has a deadline—such as an immigration request, court document, eviction notice or appeal—say that at the beginning. A settlement worker can help identify the right professional, but you should not assume the appointment stops the deadline.
