You do not need to solve everything in your first week. Start with the tasks that make other tasks easier.
Do these first
- Store your documents safely. Keep passports, permits, confirmation papers, birth and marriage certificates, school records and vaccination records together. Make encrypted digital copies, but do not routinely carry every original.
- Get a Canadian phone number and reliable email access. Government services, employers, schools and landlords often use them to reach you.
- Find a settlement organization. A settlement worker can help you understand local services, complete forms and find language or employment programs. Many eligible newcomers can use these services at no cost.
- Apply for a Social Insurance Number if you need one. You need a SIN to work and to access some government programs. Apply through Service Canada—never pay a private company for a SIN.
- Check health coverage where you live. Each province and territory runs its own plan. Ask when coverage begins and what to do in the meantime.
- Open a bank account carefully. Compare monthly fees and ask for a written explanation of any newcomer offer before agreeing to a credit card or other product.
If you have children
Contact your local school board rather than waiting for a permanent address if housing is still uncertain. Ask what identification, address, immigration and vaccination records the board needs. A settlement worker may know whether your community has a newcomer reception centre.
Make one simple record
Write down every application you submit, including the date, confirmation number and next expected step. Keep this list separate from your passwords. It will save time if you need to follow up.
Be careful with urgency
A real government office will not threaten immediate arrest or deportation unless you pay by gift card, cryptocurrency or wire transfer. Do not share one-time security codes. If a message frightens you, stop and verify it using a phone number or website you found independently.
